Batteries made with Lithium-Ion offer exponentially longer backup times and much lighter weight
Irwindale, Calif. — September 19, 2011 — Falcon Electric, Inc., (www.FalconUPS.com), award-winning manufacturer of on-line uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs), frequency converters and precision ac regulators, today announced that it has added Lithium-Ion batteries as an option to its 1500VA model of its SSG Series Industrial Grade UPS Plus. Lithium-ion chemistry offers several advantages over valve regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries including less weight, longer runtimes and higher energy density.
“For many applications such as those for the military, weight is of special concern. By using Lithium-ion batteries, we can reduce over 15 pounds of weight from the overall UPS system, while providing twice the amount of battery runtime – that’s significant especially for use in military aircraft and Humvees,” said Falcon’s Vice President of Engineering, Michael A. Stout. “Now, customers have a choice between our ten-year rated VRLA batteries or Lithium-ion for our popular 1500VA model.”
The SSG Series is a true double-conversion on-line sinewave regenerative UPS that is an advanced, robust and rugged solution that provides military, aerospace and industrial applications with a high level of power protection that tolerates many of the elements found in these harsh environments. Due to its rugged design, the U.L. listed SSG Series is capable of withstanding elevated temperatures of up to 131º Fahrenheit (F) (55º Celsius). The SSG Series, which is available in 1500VA, 2200VA and 3000VA configurations, can be placed in an equipment rack or installed as a stand-alone tower in close proximity to the critical load.
This eliminates the need to shield the UPS from the environment. Moreover, the SSG’s 10-year rated VRLA batteries when operated in a typical environment of 21C to 23C double the average UPS battery life. When operated in harsher temperature environments at 50C, the projected battery life is four years – quadrupling the battery operating life over typical UPSs.
The SSG Series also provides users with an improved level of battery monitoring and replacement notification, as well as user-friendly, hot-swappable battery packs. Slide-out battery packs are easily replaced through the UPS front panel, without having to remove the UPS from the equipment rack, eliminating the handling of individual batteries and the associated wiring hassles.
The SSG Series is a true regenerative on-line UPS which is designed to give users the highest level of protection against a wide spectrum of power problems. It provides a continuous, clean, tightly regulated power source from the most polluted incoming AC power source. Unlike off-line and line-interactive UPS designs, the SSG Series acts as an electronic firewall between incoming “dirty” power and sensitive micro-processor-based Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), computers and automated systems found in these industrial environments.
For unattended OS shutdown and easy monitoring of the UPS system, Falcon’s UPSilon® shutdown and management software supports Windows® platforms including Windows 7 and server version 2008 RX, as well as Novell NetWare® 5 & 6, LINUX and FreeBSD. For remote management, users may purchase an optional SNMP/HTTP agent board that installs directly inside the UPS and provides a TCP-IP addressable, 10/100 Ethernet communications for remote monitoring and management.
