PISCATAWAY, N.J. – February 3, 2011 – Power.org, the organization that promotes and develops standards for Power Architecture® technology, is celebrating 20 years of innovation leading to unrivaled market leadership and a collaborative ecosystem that will continue advancing and creating new technology across an increasing breadth of markets and applications. Throughout the anniversary year Power.org will host events and activities designed to share the success of Power Architecture accomplishments, provide insight into the future of the technology and ecosystem. The first event will be exhibits at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, where Power.org was founded in 2005.
“Power Architecture’s heritage and the continued commitment from major players presage a future rich in innovation, growing leadership in new markets and dominant positions where it has already established leadership,” said Richard Dean, Senior Analyst and Manager of Embedded Hardware and Systems, VDC Research. “The Power.org™ ecosystem is committed to executing a comprehensive roadmap that will address demanding performance challenges and the drive toward higher performance from smaller, more compact products to meet the changing demands of markets and applications.”
The past two decades have witnessed the growth of the Power ISA series as the common thread for an extremely broad range of 32-bit to 64-bit devices, with the most recent versions – Power ISA 2.04/2.05/2.06 – supporting multicore, virtualization, hypervisor and the power management required for next generation systems. Today, Power Architecture technology is pervasive, with $4.4B of the total 32/64 bit microprocessor market making it the #1 worldwide market share leader in 32-bit MPUs and the #2 worldwide leader in 64-bit CPUs. More than a billion Power Architecture technology-based chips have been built into electronics equipment in a wide range of markets.
“By 2014, mobile infrastructure devices are expected to consume approximately $9 billion annually in 32-bit and 64-bit processors,” said Research Manager Tom Hackenberg of IMS Research, “and with the leading core architecture for 32-bit microprocessors and a significant provider of many other mobile infrastructure core-solutions, Power Architecture suppliers are well placed to benefit from this high growth market.”
European Event: Mobile World Congress
At Mobile World Congress (February 14 – 17, 2011), Power.org, Freescale Semiconductor, and IBM, will be highlighting the latest advancement of Power Architecture technology and ecosystem differentiated offerings in booth #2J56. As part of Power.org’s Mobile World Congress participation, AppliedMicro, ENEA, HCL Technologies, LSI, and Synopsys will also be in attendance. Additional events will be held throughout the anniversary year.
“Working collaboratively, Power Architecture ecosystem members have delivered a clear and commanding message: market leaders are committed to ensuring the availability of a wide range products needed to create and build systems leveraging the Power Architecture standard are readily available,” said Kaveh Massoudian, CTO, Power.org Strategic Alliance, IBM. “This leadership and commitment is evident throughout Power.org and serves as a foundation for continued collaboration, growth, innovation, and leadership.”
The latest Power Architecture silicon roadmap that was released in Fall 2010, demonstrates the ecosystem’s continued investment and commitment to driving major advancements in SoC architecture and solutions designed to strengthen existing market leadership and penetrate new markets.
20 Years of Innovation
The collaborative work of some of the industry’s most renowned experts have given Power Architecture technology worldwide market leadership, making it number one in:
• Core-based FPGA for Communications and Networking, Wireless Infrastructure
• Embedded 32-bit MPU for Automotive, Communications and Networking, Industrial Automation, Medical, Military and Aerospace, Wireless Infrastructure
Power Architecture technology has a rich history of leadership including:
• Automotive – no other 32-bit core family covers more applications within the Automotive space from Powertrain, Body and Chassis, to Safety and Infotainment
• Compute – fastest (5GHz) and most resilient enterprise servers; market leadership in enterprise-class multifunctional printers
• Consumer – core technology for the newest generation of innovative game consoles (X-Box 360, Wii, PS3); first Android operating system (OS) port available as open source code for the embedded community. Power Architecture technology is also widely used in Pachinko gaming machines in Japan.
• High Performance Computing – 2 of TOP10 and 5 of TOP20 of the world’s most powerful supercomputers are Power Architecture based (www.top500.org). IBM BlueGene/Q, the “Greenest Supercomputer in the World” and 13 of 25 power efficient systems are Power Architecture (www.green500.org)
• Military & Aerospace – the only architecture used in every space mission to Mars
• Wired Communications – core embedded technology and intelligence for 50% of enterprise/core communications networks for switching and routing equipment
• Wireless Communications – de-facto standard in the embedded telecom in wireless infrastructure market differentiated with high performance, low power SoCs (multi-core processing, virtualization, energy management)
