Natick, Massachusetts – June 25, 2010 – According to VDC Research’s latest report, the Slot Single Board Computer (SBC) market, which reached over $1.4B in 2009, is poised for exponential growth over the next several years after suffering in both 2008 and 2009. Investment budget cuts led to market contraction, but VDC expects the market to return to pre-recession levels as companies across verticals begin to make investments in new infrastructure and equipment.
Despite the promising forecast, the report indicates the Slot SBC market is faced with a significant threat from embedded motherboards and other single-board, active backplane board architectures.
“Right now, customers are looking for products that can reduce the size, weight and power at a lower cost, and they will likely turn toward the single-board solutions that can now satisfy applications previously served by slot architectures,” said Eric Heikkila, Director of VDC Research’s Embedded Hardware & Systems practice. “These single-board solutions are able to provide higher performance with the most recent multi-core processors, and we expect that many applications outside of the communications infrastructure, military/aerospace and other highest performance vertical segments will swap out slot SBCs with the active backplane single-board SBCs.”
