SANTA ANA, CA – March 11, 2009 – ITT Interconnect Solutions, a leading global manufacturer and supplier of connectors, interconnects, and cable assemblies, has partnered with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in the use of its Micro-D microminiature connectors for India’s Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, which is currently in lunar orbit. ITT’s high-reliability Micro-D connectors are used to transmit information on data input and conversion equipment on the spacecraft, which is carrying, among other equipment, a state of the art imaging spectrometer that will provide the first map of the entire lunar surface at high spatial and spectral resolution.
“We began working with the ISRO in 2005 when our Micro-D connectors were first designed-in, and are slated to continue our collaboration well into the future. In addition to the Chandrayaan moon venture, ISRO plans to launch 40 satellites over the next five years, a number of which will feature our connectors,” said Keith Teichmann, director of marketing for ITT Interconnect Solutions.
ITT’s Micro-D rectangular connectors exhibit excellent dielectric properties, are immune to cleaning solvents, and are encased in a glass-filled thermoset plastic shell that is resistant to high temperatures ranging from -55 degrees C to +149 degrees C. The connectors feature gold plated crimped contacts, contact pitch spacing of 0.050″, friction/jackscrew coupling, and plug and receptacle style shells.
The Micro-D connectors are available in two insulator materials, two mounting variations, and seven shell sizes that can accommodate nine to 51 contacts, as well as a special arrangement of five micro contacts and two coaxials. The connectors can also be custom harnessed to meet any requirement of single or multiple connectors. The wide variety of Micro-D configurations enables them to be used in virtually any application that requires highly reliable, extremely small, lightweight connectors.
