CWCDS Introduces the XF07-523, its First Rugged Xlinix Kintex FPGA-based Digital I/O XMC Card |
High Wycombe, UK – September 5, 2012 – Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions (CWCDS), a business unit of Curtiss-Wright Controls, has announced the XF07-523 Digital I/O XMC, the first member of a new family of Xilinx® Kintex™-7 FPGA based XMC cards for high-end defense and aerospace applications. The XF07-523 provides direct FPGA driven LVDS I/O through the front panel and PMC/XMC connectors for rear I/O on a fully ruggedized XMC module designed to perform optimally in the harshest conditions including +85C card edge conduction-cooled solutions. This new open standards-based XMC module (VITA 42) is the first product to debut in CWCDS’s recently announced broad family of Kintex-7 FPGA-based standard COTS analog, digital and fibre optic XMC cards. This high performance module is ideal for use in a wide range of applications that require high-speed FPGA based digital I/O such as avionics, radar, digital imaging, and FPGA co-processor and other test equipment.
“Demanding environments, such as UAVs, will benefit greatly from the combination of affordability and high performance made possible by Xilinx’s latest generation Kintex 7 FPGAs,” said Lynn Bamford, senior vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions. “Our new XF07-523, the first of a complete family of Kintex 7-based XMC solutions, delivers the highest level of ruggedization in a design optimized to mitigate thermal management challenges in SWaP-constrained environments.”
CWCDS’ new XF07-523 represents a new generation of high performance FPGA processing and I/O available on a small form factor XMC mezzanine card. Especially well-suited for radar and image processing applications, the XF07-523 delivers ~3x the performance available from earlier generation digital I/O cards while essentially keeping power dissipation the same.

Making MCOTS Practical
For customers who desire the benefits of COTS XMC FPGA offerings, but have unique, specialized I/O requirements, CWCDS’ new XF07 family’s revolutionary architecture simplifies and speeds the availability of custom MCOTS solutions. Previously, changing I/O on a standard card required moving the FPGA and memory components to find space on the card for the new I/O type. This is a complex process that can require changes to component traces, re-routing and re-designing the card’s FPGA building blocks. The XF07 family introduces a new architecture that eliminates re-design complexity. The XF07 family establishes a new common core FPGA processing block and strictly defined PCB territory that enables fast, simple modification and upgrading for memory and I/O interfaces with minimal effort.
About the Xilinx® Kintex™-7 FPGA
Kintex-7 FPGAs offer high-density logic, high-performance serial connectivity, memory, and DSP capabilities to enable higher system-level performance and the next level of integration. Fabricated on a high-performance, low-power (HPL) 28nm process, all Xilinx 7 series FPGAs – which includes the Artix™-7, Kintex-7, and Virtex®-7 FPGAs– share a scalable optimized architecture that enables design migration across the families. System manufacturers can easily scale successful designs to address adjacent markets requiring reduced cost and power or increased performance and capability. The adoption of AMBA 4, AXI4 specification as part of the interconnect strategy supporting Plug-and-Play FPGA design further improves productivity with IP reuse, portability, and predictability.
