Oshkosh Defense, a division of Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK), will have its Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) A3 on display at the Pentagon Energy Security Event. The only military vehicle of its kind, the HEMTT A3 delivers greater fuel efficiency and the added capability of delivering enough exportable energy to power an airfield, hospital or command center.
“It is an honor to showcase the Oshkosh HEMTT A3’s capabilities at the Pentagon as part of Energy Awareness Month,” said Mike Ivy, vice president and general manager of Army Programs for Oshkosh Defense. “This vehicle is a great example of our commitment to support the Army with technology that enables greater capabilities while improving fuel efficiency. We think this truck will lead the way to the next generation of tactical wheeled vehicles.”
The HEMTT A3 uses the Oshkosh ProPulse® hybrid diesel-electric drive technology to deliver 100 kW of exportable military-grade power and 20 percent improved fuel economy. At the event, the HEMTT A3 is being displayed with a fully integrated Mobile Land-based Phalanx Weapon System (MLPWS) from Raytheon. The MLPWS recently completed a proof of concept demonstration at Yuma Proving Grounds and met all demonstration objectives.
The HEMTT A3 delivers greater efficiency and exportable power capabilities without compromising the vehicle’s payload and protection. In addition to powering an airfield, hospital or command center, the vehicle can also be used to mobilize and power weapon systems, IED-suppression technologies and radar systems. By eliminating the need for extra support equipment, such as trailer-mounted generators, the vehicle offers the Army leaner, more mobile fleets and a reduced logistics footprint.
Oshkosh is also displaying a REMM™ (Renewable Energy Mission Module) system at the event. The REMM, which Oshkosh is developing under license by Natural Power Concepts, uses a folding blade wind turbine and photovoltaic solar panel modules to provide renewable electrical power for expeditionary missions and forward-operating bases (FOBs), as well as for humanitarian and disaster recovery missions anywhere in the world. The REMM can also integrate expanded capabilities, such as water purification and desalination systems.
The purpose of the Pentagon Energy Security Event, October 12-15, is to promote energy-security initiatives across the Department of Defense, and empower its work force with knowledge about energy-related national security issues.
