Santa Ana, CA⎯ Pulizzi Engineering, Inc. announces their compliance to the RoHS Directive standards for the restriction of hazardous substances in electronic equipment. This directive bans placing products on the EU (European Union) market if they surpass allowable levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants. Companies shipping banned substances in their products after July 1, 2006 can face fines or prosecution by the EU.
According to Mike Pulizzi, Vice President of Pulizzi Engineering, Inc., “Our first RoHS product released to production was manufactured in February 2006. Since that date, we have released 25 additional products as RoHS compliant”. The RoHS conversion effort has been over a two-year process and included implementation of new lead free solder processes. The products converted include all catalog products designed for use in the EU market, which are identified by the IEC type C13 “computer style” connectors. The RoHS directive is required for any company that either ships directly into the EU or has customers that ship into the EU. There are also advantages for products that ship into North America. By removing hazardous substances, the products are safer to handle and create less health risks when disposed of at the end of their life cycle.
Pulizzi Engineering’s RoHS compliance program includes a multi-step process that exceeds industry standards. All materials have supplier declarations of compliance on file. When materials are received, they are required to have a RoHS marking on the package. Received materials are then inspected and randomly tested with x-ray scanning technology. The scanning process helps find any potential distributor mix-ups and allows for some secondary verification of manufacturer certifications. It also prevents lead components from entering and contaminating the lead free circuit board manufacturing processes. Material is marked as RoHS and is kept separate until pulled for assembly. The assembled product goes through a final RoHS compliance check before being marked as RoHS and shipped to the customer.
