Avionics Interface Technologies (AIT) has developed a PXI-C1553 variant for testing, simulation, monitoring and analysis. The interface module was designed to simulate the transmission and reception of data over an avionics databus with the same physical characteristics of a MIL-STD-1553 databus, but with a different protocol.

A team of AIT engineers modified the FPGA firmware on the PXI-C1553 to meet the unique standards of the protocol and add custom functionalities, such as the capability to introduce and detect protocol errors. Because the physical interface was identical to MIL-STD-1553, the requirements were entirely met with modification to the firmware. This allowed engineers to minimize the effect on AIT’s Application Programmer’s Interface (API). Lockheed Martin has become the first team to successfully integrate the customized AIT PXI-C1553 variant into its electronic warfare product line.

The solution was built on a 3U PXI Hybrid board, and is fully compatible with PXI, PXIe and CompactPCI. The design approach taken by AIT’s team enables the variant solution to be easily integrated into existing systems.

“We’re proud that Lockheed Martin was successful using Avionics Interface Technologies’ customized PXI solution, especially given the challenges posed by a unique avionics interface,” said Ken Bisson, Vice President of AIT. “Companies want low-cost, off-the-shelf solutions, but different avionics interfaces come with different requirements. We ensure that our avionics boards are provided with all the driver and API software so our customers can easily integrate these interfaces within their systems. AIT delivers proven integrated solutions.”

AIT is a leading designer and manufacturer of high-performance flight modules, test and simulation modules, embedded solutions, databus analyzers, and support systems. The company has supported all major Defense Department top-tier suppliers as well as the Air Force, Navy, Army, Marines, and NASA directly. Their technically superior products offer both custom and commercial-off-the-shelf user software and a flexible hardware architecture based on the use of FPGAs with embedded Power PC Processors for onboard specific application programming. AIT has four office locations in the United States, headquartered in Omaha, NE, with design and production based in Dayton, Ohio, near Wright Patterson AFB.
