Single board computer to be part of Marine Systems and Simulation capability
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –(Business Wire)– Dec 21, 2009 GE Intelligent Platforms, a unit of GE Enterprise Solutions, today announced that it had secured an order for a quantity of VME7667 single board computers from L-3 MAPPS of Quebec, Canada. The order is valued at $750,000 for the current year; the requirement is projected to continue for several years. L-3 MAPPS supplies automation and control systems for the naval industry, and the VME7667 will be integrated as part of the company’s Marine Systems and Simulation capability, where it will handle I/O systems, as well as managing data for the GUI (Graphical User Interface).
An example of a recent program that took advantage of L-3 MAPPS’ Marine Systems and Simulation capability is the upgrade/modernization of Canada’s Halifax Class frigates in response to the changing environments in which the vessels are deployed. L-3 MAPPS is supplying its Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) that will help handle damage control, electrical control, and machinery control on board. The system will also link sensors and computer systems to the Halifax Class Command and Control System, providing real-time updates. All 12 of Canada’s Halifax frigates are expected to be upgraded by 2017 at a projected total cost of $2.9 billion.
“Much of today’s focus in military embedded computing is on bringing the latest technology to a broad range of air, sea and land platforms,” said Peter Cavill, General Manager, Military & Aerospace Products for GE Intelligent Platforms, “not only improving their capabilities but also adapting them for the changing nature of conflict.”
The VME7667 is a version of GE Intelligent Platforms’ V7807 single board computer, specifically customized for the needs of L-3 MAPPS. The board is a ‘drop in’ replacement for a previous single board computer designed and built in-house by L-3 MAPPS. GE Intelligent Platforms also provided extensive environmental qualification and documentation. The V7807 on which the VME7667 is based is a 6U VMEbus single board computer featuring an Intel® Pentium® M processor, up to 1.5 GBytes of memory, dual Gigabit Ethernet ports and a PMC expansion site. Its extensive I/O capabilities also include four serial ports, four USB 2.0 ports, and serial ATA and IDE interfaces.
