EMBEDDED WORLD, Nuremburg, Germany – March 2, 2009 — Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing has announced that it will support the new industrial temperature range version of the Intel® Atom™ processor Z5xx series on its recently introduced rugged low power, high performance, small factor VPX3-1100 ATOMIC board family. The Atom processor Z5xx series features advanced power management techniques such as new C6 state (Deep Power Down Technology) Enhanced Intel SpeedStep® technology, CMOS mode and Split IO power supply support. These low power features make the Intel Atom processor Z5xx series ideal for space, weight and power (SWaP) constrained and fanless embedded applications such as the secure rugged deployed aerospace and defense applications for which the VPX3-1100 ATOMIC was designed
“The ultra-low power, highly integrated VPX3-1100 ATOMIC single board computer will take full advantage of the new options for the Intel® Atom™ processor and the Intel® System Controller Hub US15W,” said Lynn Patterson, vice president and general manager of Modular Solutions, Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing. “When combined with our innovative 2LM-ATS Perimeter Defense technology, the VPX3-1100 ATOMIC delivers a new breed of low power SBC that puts Curtiss-Wright at the forefront of embedded highly secure computing.”
“The new options of the Intel Atom processor platform are an ideal fit for a myriad of critical processor platforms that must endure wide temperature ranges and deliver the highest performance in the harshest conditions,” said Jonathan Luse, director of marketing, Low Power Embedded Products Division, Intel. “These rugged, low-power platforms, such as the Curtiss Wright Controls VPX3-1100 ATOMIC, help to meet the demanding requirements of embedded military applications.”
Intel’s use of 45nm high-k metal gate silicon technology on the Intel Atom processor Z5xx series results in significantly reduced power consumption, increased switching speed, and increased transistor density over processors based on previous 65nm technology. The combination of the platform’s ultra low power, less than five watt thermal design power, and industrial operating temperature range (minus 40 to 85 C), make it ideal for use on VPX3-1100 ATOMIC which is designed for use in harsh embedded environments. Intel’s commitment to support the Intel Atom processor Z5xx series with 7-year long lifecycle support helps address the long program needs of aerospace and defense customers.
